rhino

Watercolor and gouache on Bristol Board. This illustration feels almost like a portrait to me, it has so much character. I spent a day at the Oakland Zoo shooting reference, and the rhinos were right up next to the fence. I got to see every lovely eyelash.

I adore rhinos, elephants, and hippos. Not only are they beautiful to behold, they're the last few remnants of the Pleistocene "megafauna", descendants of the shaggy, red-haired giants who survived the Ice Ages. The world would be a smaller place without them.
